Munich in the final

Final support for our bid

We made it! On February, 1, 2021 the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) announced their decision: Munich is among the last three applicants to host the Gay Games 2026. We are all incredibly proud that we have achieved this important milestone and congratulate the two remaining bid cities Guadalajara (Mexico) and Valencia (Spain) on this success! It has been an exciting journey so far: twenty cities from around the world had initially expressed interest in hosting the 2026 Games.

At this point we would like to thank everyone who supported us on our journey, including in particular: the city of Munich, the Olympiapark Munich, the TUM campus of the Olympiapark, BMW and Siemens, Thomas Hitzlsperger, FC Bayern München and all other supporters and sponsors.

We are confident and positive that Munich would be a great host: not only because Munich has been named the most livable city in the world. All guests and participants will certainly enjoy the Olympic spirit when watching and participating in the many sport and cultural events. We feel empowered to build a legacy with our outreach to our Eastern Europe neighbors and friends. Submitting an extended bid book and site inspections are the next steps in the bid process. With our committed and constantly growing team of volunteers, partners and sponsors we continue to dream to be named the host of Gay Games XII, which will finally be determined at the FGG's Annual General Assembly meeting in Hong Kong in November 2021.

Why Munich?

Metropolis with heart

Metropolis with heart

Munich is a city with heart - cosmopolitan, tolerant and colorful! A city that combines modernity and tradition and in which sports of all kinds play a central role. In addition, Munich is one of the most sustainable cities in Germany and has an excellent public transport network with short distances.

High level of safety

High level of safety

Munich is considered the safest major city in Germany and has already proven this at numerous major events. With its infrastructure for sports and cultural events, such as the Olympic Park, Munich offers perfect locations for the safe hosting of the Gay Games.

Starke Community

Inclusion, integration and cordiality are lived in Munich, which is made clear by a strong community and political support. The visibility of the Community from numerous federations, associations and organizations takes place in Munich daily, not least with the annual CSD conclusion party in the Munich city hall.

What are the Gay Games?

The Gay Games is the world's largest amateur sports event, which is mainly, but not exclusively, aimed at LGBTQ+ athletes and takes place every four years. In addition to 30 to 35 sports, the event also includes an extensive cultural program, in particular a Rainbow Choir and Music Festival and a Human Rights Conference. Approximately 15,000 athletes and other visitors are expected to attend the Gay Games, which are scheduled to take place on August 8 - 15, 2026.

The Gay Games were created in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell in San Francisco with the goal of helping thousands of LGBTQ+ athletes gain visibility and acceptance. Important principles of the Federation of Gay Games (FGG, supporting organization) are participation, inclusion and the "outgrowth of oneself" of all participants - Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best!
